HEAT LUTON

Sadly, many people don’t have a coat this winter – homeless, refugees, the elderly and even children going to schools. Inspired by local residents, our annual HeatLuton campaign also includes accepting donated coats for all ages which are freely available to those in need and offered to our charity partners including Age Concern Luton, Level Trust, Luton Foodbank, Mary Seacole and homeless shelters across the town.

When a vulnerable person reaches out to a charity for a coat this winter, they’ll also be signposted to support and services in the town. This means that a coat you have donated could be the beginning of a relationship between those who need help and those who can provide it.

HOSPITAL HELIPAD APPEAL

Discover Islam led a fundraising campaign to raise £100,000 for Luton and Dunstable Hospitals helipad. Supported by Luton Mosques, Inspire FM, schools, community organisations and generous donors, a campaign site was developed spurring on events across the county throughout 2019. This video is an excerpt from some of the attendees at the 2019 community-led charity dinner.

LUTON FLU FIGHTERS

Each year millions of children get sick with seasonal flu, thousands of children are hospitalized and some sadly die from the flu. Luton Flu Fighters aims to protect our children and other vulnerable groups from this unpredictable and dangerous virus.

The Luton Flu Fighters campaign was initiated by Discover Islam in partnership with the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes (BLMK) Integrated Care System and supported by Luton mosques, as well as local community organisations.

The campaign was successfully piloted in 8 schools across Luton, which we hope to expand on in the coming year. The outcomes of the project were shared at the National Immunisations Network conference in a discussion of driving better health and learning outcomes within primary education.

COME ON YOU HATTERS + SUPPORT THE HOSPITAL

The local Muslim community came out to distribute over 1,000 free Ferrero Rocher packs to Hatters’ fans to celebrate the clubs second consecutive promotion and thank all the supporters.

We also used this as an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the Luton & Dunstable Helipad Appeal, initiated by several local organisations, to over 10,000 home fans.

HUNDREDS RUN TO SUPPORT THE CURRY KITCHEN

We were overwhelmed by support from Luton Borough Council, running group Luton Lions and hundreds of residents who joined the LoveLuton 10k and half marathon to raise funds for our weekly Friday Curry Kitchen.

BUILDING UNDERSTANDING & A STRONGER COMMUNITY

Sports fans and friends from across the UK participated in a charity cricket tournament to support the work of the Discover Islam Luton centre, recognising the contribution made to improve awareness, strengthen community relations and serve the whole region.

The event was organised by cricketing organisation, Indoor Big Bash, and hosted by Challney High School for Boys with the closing speech delivered by inspiring headteacher and community leader, Daniel Connor.

DEVELOPING AND DELIVERING PRESENTATIONS & TRAINING

Over the last year our team were invited to deliver workshops on Hajj, Ramadan and Islamic basics to supplement the Religious Studies curriculum at local schools including Maidenhall Primary, Farley Juniors and Linden Academy.

We also delivered presentations at mosques across Luton during the national ‘Visit My Mosque Day’ reaching over 500 locals, as well as speaking at national events.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISING FOR LOCAL CAUSES

Discover Islam and the Luton Council of Mosques hosted a roundtable discussion on the issue of Islamophobia which is increasingly becoming prevalent in society.

We invited local emergency services, schools and colleges, the council, other faith groups and key community organisations to discuss the issue of Islamophobia and how we can work as a community to tackle such issue.

We’re pleased to have supported the launch of the ‘Big Change Luton’, working in partnership with several local organisations to help people build a life away from the streets.

Members of the local community were invited to donate £3 at various tap points scattered around Luton Town Centre and the Railway Station to support the campaign.

Discover Islam has continued to support Luton Foodbank as a referral and distribution centre serving anyone in need of emergency food. As well as coordinating cross-town collections with mosques and community organisations, we have partnerships with local take-aways who offer food for anyone in need and our Friday Curry Kitchen.
During December 2019, we launched our Heat Luton Winter Coat Campaign, accepting over 500 coat donations from the local community to help those living in poverty to ensure no one suffers in the cold. These donations were offered to local partners including Noah, Signposts and Luton Community Housing to distribute amongst their service users.

Homelessness is sad at any time of the year but more so during Winter. Any help for them is amazing. My son also brought in biscuits for the centre. Hope they’re enjoyed.
