The Discover Islam Centre laid on a delicious, community feast as part of the Lets Eat Together community campaign led by InspireFM, in partnership with Luton Borough Council and private community centres across town.
The event which was trending on social media with hashtag #LetsEatTogether attracted over 50 visitors to the Discover Islam Centre, as well as many more around town. We hosted guests of many different faiths and cultural backgrounds. Volunteers from the community, including families enjoying the first days of the school winter break, prepared and served food to community members throughout the day.
Guests were provided guided tours of the centre and gifted with free literature about Islam. In order to ensure none of the food went to waste, food packs were also prepared for passers-by in the town centre as well.
The event was an excellent complement to the weekly Curry Kitchen held every Friday at the centre for the homeless. Hot food is prepared by professional caterers at Community Interest Luton and freely provided to visitors and also driven out to homeless shelters, ensuring distribution fairly across the town. The Discover Islam centre is also a drop-off and referral point for Luton Foodbank providing long-life food items to the towns most needy.
#LetsEatTogether was a fantastic opportunity to develop relationships between different communities, and an initiative Discover Islam hope to host again soon. We would like to thank Inspire FM for coordinating and all the volunteers who funded, supported and ran the event ensuring it was a success.
